Functional Prototyping

Don't cut steel molds until you are sure. We print functional prototypes in engineering thermoplastics (ABS, ASA, PETG) that mimic the performance of injection molded parts. Test your snap-fits, assembly tolerances, and thermal performance instantly.

Advantages

Why 3D print with Polymerate Labs?

Rapid Iteration (Fail Fast, Fix Faster)

Move from a CAD design to a physical object in hours, not weeks.

Benefit: This allows your R&D team to test multiple design variants in the time it usually takes to machine just one. If Version 1 doesn't fit, Version 2 can be printed overnight.

Functional Fidelity

Using engineering-grade thermoplastics (like ABS, ASA, and Nylon), our prototypes simulate the mechanical properties of final production parts.

Benefit: You can perform drop tests, snap-fit analysis, and thermal testing on the prototype itself, validating performance before cutting expensive steel molds.

Bridge Manufacturing (Low Volume Production)

Need 50 units for a beta launch but your injection molds are 8 weeks away? We can print a small batch of end-use parts to bridge the gap.

Benefit: Get your product to market faster and generate revenue while waiting for mass production tooling.

Cost-Effective Complexity

In 3D printing, "complexity is free." Printing a hollow lattice structure costs less than printing a solid block because it uses less material.

Benefit: Engineers can experiment with weight-saving designs (topology optimization and part consolidation) without worrying about driving up manufacturing costs during the prototyping phase.

Materials

PLA+ ,ABS, ASA, PETG, PA6-Gf: Performance parts, Proof-of-concept (POC) and Bridge Manufacturing - (Mid cost)

Material FamilySpecific GradeBest Use Case
Visual / FitPLA+ (Polylactic Acid)"Looks Like" Models. Best for checking size, ergonomics, and aesthetic form. It is rigid and prints with high dimensional accuracy but has low heat resistance (55°C).
FunctionalPETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate)Snap-Fits & Living Hinges. A tough material that bends before it breaks. Ideal for prototyping clips, enclosures, and parts that need chemical resistance.
EngineeringABS / ASA"Works Like" Models. The standard for consumer electronics prototyping. It can be sanded, painted, and glued easily. ASA is UV resistant, making it perfect for outdoor housing prototypes.
PerformancePA6-GFStructural Testing. Carbon-fiber reinforced materials that offer high stiffness and heat resistance. Use this for functional brackets, drone frames, or automotive parts under load.

For standard geometries, we hold tolerances of ±0.1 mm to ±0.2 mm. While injection molding can achieve tighter tolerances (microns), our precision is sufficient for validating fit, assembly, and function in 95% of engineering projects.

If designed correctly for 3D printing, they will work. We recommend using PETG or Nylon for snap-fits as they are ductile. We also advise orienting the print so that the "flex" of the snap-fit does not align with the layer lines (which is the weakest point).

Our build volume is 320 x 320 x 320 mm. However, for larger parts (like car bumpers or full-size housings), we split the model into sections, print them separately, and permanently bond them together. The resulting bond is often stronger than the parent material.

Yes. We offer post-processing services including sanding, filler priming, and spray painting. For ABS parts, we can also use vapor smoothing to create a glossy, injection-mold-like finish that is water-tight and aesthetically pleasing for investor pitches.
